How much should we pay for SIM unlocked phones?

 
A growing number of mobile device manufacturers like Palm, HTC and velocity mobile start selling their smartphones directly in retail are SIM unlocked. This is great, because it can people the latest get faster mobile phones and not worry whether you the phone can use your preferred provider for wireless services.

However, it is a price for the flexibility to pay. The phones are not subsidized by a carrier, you are usually several hundred dollars more expensive than the equivalent phones which sold by a carrier. I wonder whether these companies will have good luck with the sale of these phones in quantity.
